“I just bought Greenland.”
(by Michael Lomazow)
My original caption: “Do you realize that eating has become a thirty-dollar-a-day habit?”
Congratulations, Michael Lomazow, on your eighth win. Your previous victory was not that long ago, in Contest No. 225, so you should be pretty familiar with the routine: you’re one of the funniest people around, and you can shout it to the world!
A little explanation of my choice might be in order, so here it is: I ordinarily would not have chosen Michael’s caption because it deals with a current “hot topic” and I feel that a good gag cartoon should not get “political” or be concerned with a subject that can easily get dated and forgotten in a short time. But Michael’s caption brought a big smile to my face, and thanks to President Trump, it looks like Greenland will be in the spotlight for a long, long time to come. Good job, Michael!
Here are the other captions that were under consideration for top honors:
“What do you have to say for yourself?” (by Diane Weisman)
“I’d send some begging letters to our friends but we can’t afford the postage.” (by Ken Wilkinson)
“What the hell is the spouse fund?” (also by Michael Lomazow)
“We’ll definitely be in the black by tomorrow. I forgot to pay the electric bill again.” (by Lee Lacewell)
“Honey, it’s 2026, let’s switch to electronic non-payment.” (by Mark S.)
“Isn’t it your turn?” (by Scott Malcolm)
“It’s One Big Ugly Bill after another.” (by Joe Ayella)
“We are now the proud owners of a poor house.” (by Pat Foley)
“Have you come to chapter 11 yet?” (also by Pat Foley)
Barring any more computer glitches, Contest No. 235 will be posted at its usual time. So be on the lookout for it and many thanks for participating!

Good day Eli,
I agree that Michael’s caption should have won. His caption was ‘bang on’ and elicited quite a strong reaction from me.
I think it would be interesting to see the different reactions to his caption by an American compared with someone from Greenland, Iceland, Canada, etc.
