I think men’s ‘over the top’ love of sports has always been a good ‘go to’ source for gag cartoonist.
Maybe a caption like:
“Hold on a sec….if he strikes out I’ll drive you to the bus station.” Would work too.
Your suggested caption is OK, but it doesn’t get across the point that his wife is leaving him for good (she could just be going on a short trip).
I see, …. good point!
How about:
“Earlier the TV repairman said he would carry ‘the bags’ to the car but I told him you can walk.”
“TV repairman”? Is there such a person anymore? Be that as it may, in my humble opinion your latest caption is kind of mean-spirited, not very humorous and still doesn’t solve the problem of revealing that his wife is leaving him for good.
I value your opinion but, with my hat in hand, I humbly disagree.
My thought here was, the (time peroid appropriate) TV depicted appears to be the type that was often serviced by in home repairmen. I would not think of using ‘TV repairmen’ as part of an alternate caption for this (flat screen) day and time.
Wouldn’t the fact that the wife was leaving for good, in itself indicate a hostile or mean-spirited situation was occurring.
My thought here was that it could still be humorous even if she was only planning to leave until the playoffs were over and her husband’s offer to drive her to the bus station was contingent upon whether the current batter struck out or not.
We’re over-analyzing this. Let’s just agree that we disagree.
My thought exactly.
