Winner of Eli’s Cartoon Caption Contest No. 161

“The first day of school is always the toughest!”

                                            (by Kay Ralph)

My original caption: “I finally shouted ‘Eureka’ in the lab today, but it turned out to be an error.”

Congratulations, Kay Ralph, on your sixth big win! Once again, and for the second consecutive contest, you have proved to be one of the funniest people around.

I must be getting soft in the head, or maybe it’s my age finally catching up on me, but I was chuckling out loud at quite a few of the submissions for this one. There’s no doubt that some of your captions were funnier than my original feeble effort from about 40 years ago (no wonder it never sold to any publication). A slew of your captions were Covid-19 carry-overs, a few others were protest-related, and there was even a werewolf or two. Good work!

Here are the other captions that I was seriously considering for top honors:

“Not the best job interview, I’ll admit.” (by John Platt)

“Maybe this is the wrong time to be a door-to-door salesman.” (also by John Platt)

“Guess what . . . I got the position in the Chemistry Department!” (also by Kay Ralph)

“All in all . . . it was a fairly peaceful demonstration!” (also by Kay Ralph)

“Turns out I’m allergic to hand sanitizer!” (by Tim Collins)

“Trump may be on to something! Day two on Chloroquine, and so far, so good!” (also by Tim Collins)

“Don’t worry, I covered it with a bandaid.” (by Becca)

“I found out the hard way that 5′ 11″ isn’t enough. It’s got to be a full 6′.” (by Cary Antebi)

“I hate getting stuck in traffic when the full moon rises.” (also by Cary Antebi)

“I came close to getting fired today. Thankfully they just tarred and feathered me.” (also by Cary Antebi)

“There was a minor mishap at the fireworks factory today.” (by Ronn Roxx)

“I’m gonna need a bigger Band-Aid!” (also by Ronn Roxx)

“I’m wondering . . . do you think I need to upgrade my PPE?” (by Gary)

A new contest will show up in just a few short weeks, captioneers. Keep plugging away . . . and keep healthy!
