    Eli
    During the time we worked together at the NYPL, I used to occasionally play a lunch-time game of chess with that elder statesman of Stack 4, Joe Novotny. While Joe did not have a lot of higher-level education, he would invariably clean my clock within eight or ten moves.
    Thus, your cartoon would never apply to me.

    Of course I remember Joe, the formidable “King” of Stack 4. His looks and attitude were very gruff and imposing, but deep down he was a softie — a very friendly and helpful guy.
    I don’t think I ever dared to play chess with him — you were very brave!
