July 2013

Winner of Eli's Cartoon Caption Contest No. 53

"You barge into my office just to tell me I forgot to go to our wedding?"

                                            (by Howard Garrett)

My original caption: "Miss Nagle, it has come to my attention that you are getting married on company time."

Wow . . . congratulations are in order, Howard Garrett! You've entered many captions in these contests, and this is your first win. You are now officially one of the funniest people around!

Other captions that were under consideration:

"Don't worry, I won't miss it. I'll catch the live stream." (by Jonathan)

"You have a strange way of dressing for Casual Fridays." (by Cary Antebi)

"Did I forget our anniversary again?" (by Kelasher)

And, incidentally, I had to have two of Sharon's captions explained to me, because I have never watched the "Bachelor" TV show (in which, apparently, roses are handed out to competing suitors).

Nice work, all around! Another contest will be up shortly. Look for it . . . and thanks for participating.

Eli's Cartoon Caption Contest No. 53

Contest No. 53 starts right now.

Briefly, here are the details: I'll supply a drawing of one of my old cartoons that has never been published, leaving off my caption. You are invited to supply your funniest captions. Simply (1) click on "Add New Comment". Then (2) scroll down past any other submitted captions and type in your name and your caption in the spaces provided. Then (3) click "Save". Your caption (or captions) will be posted after I review your submission.

There is no limit on the number of captions you can enter for each drawing. Entries will be accepted and posted for one week, after which a winner will be announced and the winning caption will be printed. Below that I will also print my original caption.

The cut-off time and date for you to send in your captions for this contest is midnight Tuesday, July 23, 2013.

I will be the sole judge. The winning caption will be the one I judge to be the funniest one submitted (not necessarily the one that matches or comes closest to my original caption). Additional rules and regulations, for those of you who need such things, can be found here.

This is the drawing that needs your caption:

Winner of Eli's Cartoon Caption Contest No. 52

"What? You said to approach the bench."

                                           (by John Platt)

My original caption: "I plead guilty, your honor -- guilty of being a control freak!"

Well, John Platt, this is your seventh Cartoon Caption Contest win, so you certainly deserve to be recognized as one of the funniest people around. Congrats!

A few random thoughts: 1) I still like my original caption very much, even after all these years. And it still puzzles me why none of my "law" publications didn't grab my cartoon and print it. 2) I'm surprised that nobody entered a caption involving "Take-Your-Son-To Work-Day" -- it seems like such a natural for this drawing. 3) Looking at the paucity of entries, I think you're all suffering from mild cases of CWBS (Caption Writers' Block Syndrome) -- and the only person who seems to have acquired an immunity to this syndrome is Cary Antebi!

That being said, here are the other captions that I was considering for top honors:

"I sentence you to go to jail for the rest of Opposite Day!" (by Levi)

"This court is out of order." (by Cary Antebi)

"You're late. It was only supposed to be a fifteen minute recess." (also by Cary Antebi)

Contest No. 53 will be coming up soon. Get over your CWBS!
